Body mass index(BMI): Benefits & Drawbacks of BMI

The body mass index (BMI) is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of their height in meters. A high BMI can indicate a high percentage of body fat. or a person’s health.

It is an estimate of a person’s moderate body weight based on their height and weight.

BMI measurements can help us to understand whether we have underweighted or overweight.

However, the BMI of women has some limitations because it does not specifically measure body fat.

BMI ranges for women

Weight standard BMI
Underweight Below 18.5
Healthy weight 18.5–24.9
Overweight 25.0–29.9
Obese 30.0 and higher

  • cardiovascular disease
  • type 2 diabetes
  • osteoarthritis
  • stroke
  • some forms of cancer

Body mass index: If a person finds that their BMI is not in the “healthy” range, they can begin to change their diet plan and lifestyle to reduce the risk of above and other diseases.

As a measure, BMI has the following advantages:

  • It is easy to calculate using scales and tape measures at home
  • Low cost of measurement
  • Has a strong correlation with body fat levels
  • A large number of studies have shown that there is a link between BMI and health

Drawbacks of BMI

Although BMI can estimate whether a person’s weight is moderate, it does have some limitations.

As though it is related to body fat levels, BMI does not distinguish weight from fat, muscle, and bone. Therefore, a muscular person may have the same BMI as an overweight person.
